Top 5 Ways to Strengthen Your LDS family
We are indeed blessed to be living at a time when the leaders of the Church are active and present in our daily lives. We can hear their words through social media outlets, on Church websites, and through virtual broadcasts for children and youth. These are incredibly strengthening opportunities if we will only share them with our families. Our leaders are so good at addressing the youth and showing they understand the challenges of the day. These experiences are not to be missed! Please use them and the many other resources out there which help us study the gospel.
The next item on our list is to listen to the Spirit! President Nelson’s counsel to “Hear Him”1, is more important than ever. With attacks on individuals and families coming from behind enemy lines, we need the instruction of the Holy Ghost to show us where there are weaknesses in our fortifications. The Spirit might whisper that we need to check on one of our kids, to check their texts, or to sit down for a heart to heart. I recently fasted for one of my children. Only a day or two later, I felt impressed to address a poor habit with that child. What transpired as we spoke was far more powerful than anything I could have done on my own. The Spirit was powerful, and I saw a much-needed change come about in his personal life.
Family Home Evening is another important source of strength. Having dedicated time together to enjoy one another’s company while learning gospel doctrine will strengthen the family. Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin taught, “In 1915, the First Presidency instructed local leaders and parents to inaugurate a home evening, a time when parents should teach their families the principles of the gospel. The Presidency wrote: If the Saints obey this counsel, we promise that great blessings will result. Love at home and obedience to parents will increase. Faith will be developed in the hearts of the youth of Israel, and they will gain power to combat the evil influence and temptations which beset them…In 1976, the Presidency reaffirmed that regular participation in family home evening will develop increased personal worth, family unity, love for our fellowmen, and trust in our Father in heaven.”
The promises made to our families for following through with this program are glorious! Who wouldn’t want those promises?
Family Prayer and Scriptures- These are the first two of the “primary answers”. Why is that? Because they are the most basic needs for a spiritual foundation. Imagine how your children or spouse feel as you pray on their behalf. There are times while our family is praying that I can feel the Spirit wash over us, bringing a sweet influence of love and safety. That is powerful. Scriptures also have a powerful effect. How will our family learn doctrine if we are not teaching it out of those sacred pages? I do not know how it is done but I have felt that daily scripture study adds an additional layer to our spiritual armor.
Lastly, make your home a “place of security”. President Nelson taught us to follow the example of Captain Moroni in this way. Our homes become “the first line of defense.” He added, “Simply said, a place of security is anywhere you can feel the presence of the Holy Ghost and be guided by Him.”3
Our homes could be places where every member of our families wants to be, where they can feel the Holy Ghost, where they feel loved and appreciated, and where they know they belong. We need to put in the work now so that we can strengthen our loved ones in these days which are not going to get any easier.
